Backlash: A Thematic Conclusion to ”Through Your Neck”
”Backlash” is the latest track in the ”Through Your Neck” series and serves as a thematic conclusion to the project. It is also the first time I have attempted to create a shorter music video for it. That idea came from a completely different project, inspired by a comment on a completely different video on YouTube.
This musical journey for this track began with ”Through Your Neck”, which evolved into ”Whiplash” in September 2009. The original tracks were rooted in personal experiences and youthful frustrations, particularly interactions with ”Hugin”. This work is a continuation of a number of earlier pieces from the late 90s, collectively titled ”Frankly Speaking”, which was also marked by a period of frustration.
While ”Dear Joey” was initially conceived as a remix to accompany the later works (Through Your Neck and Whiplash), it developed into its own distinct story, with sampling provided by Pirjo. Unfortunately, ”Dear Joey” never reached actual completion due to limited knowledge of how to finalize music at that time. This made it challenging to start, continue, or finish compositions, especially with shorter musical pieces.
When ”Backlash” was created, the intention was for it to be more explosive and ”trancy,” similar to its predecessor. However, it ended up being more ”housified.” With the release of ”Backlash,” it signifies a full-circle moment, bringing together past influences and experiences into a cohesive narrative.
