The MINT Experiment Story

MINT, also known as The MINT Experiment, was an artist duo formed by Thomas Tornevall and Ingela Karlsson (now Ingela Machuca Burgos); With the tagline Music by Ingela ’n Thomas, their collaboration officially began with the track Bejeweled, marking the foundation of their group name.

The idea behind MINT was both conceptual and playful. First, their music was experimental in nature, as the duo was unsure of the outcome, lending a sense of spontaneity and creativity to the project. The name The MINT Experiment was also a playful nod to Mentos and cola “experiments”—in English, a mint. Despite working from separate locations, the artists created music collaboratively over MSN Messenger, later moving to Skype, a remote process that shaped much of their early work.

Bejeweled debuted on March 18, 2010, uploaded through OnlinePizza as part of a promotional contest encouraging entrants to create a music video for the track. The video was a challenge due to limited high-quality footage, so a provisional video was released to ensure the song reached an audience. Bejeweled stood out due to its unique blend of electronic beats and a melodic piano composition, garnering a moderate following. It was also played several times on di.fm (digitally imported).

In late 2010, Bejeweled was renamed Emily’s Song as a tribute to their daughter, who was born that October. The song’s creation was spontaneous – Thomas had received a basic MIDI file of a slow piano solo that inspired him to add percussion and effects, transforming it into a finished track. However, it wasn’t until December 2013 that the track was officially published via RecordUnion, making it available on platforms like Spotify.

As their partnership evolved, they produced other tracks, including a more energetic, remixed version of Bejeweled, alongside pieces titled DNA and Witness. The latter two were unnamed at the time, except for DNA, and remained unpublished for many years due to an eventual separation in 2017-2018. While Witness was nearly complete, there was indecision regarding the final sampling for the main instrument, leaving the track unfinished when the partnership ended. Nevertheless, the song saw completion in August 2017, albeit with minimal polishing.

As their partnership evolved, they expanded their portfolio, producing a more energetic, remixed version of Bejeweled, as well as tracks titled DNA and Witness. Both DNA and Witness remained unpublished for years due to a separation in 2017-2018. Witness, nearly completed by then, faced indecision over the final samples, leading to a delay. The track was ultimately finished in August 2017, with minimal revisions.

In late 2023 and early 2024, Thomas revisited these works, releasing DNA in December 2023 and a refreshed Witness in April 2024, allowing the public to experience the duo’s last completed collaborations. These releases offer a retrospective on MINT’s journey and mark a legacy of their shared creativity.

As Thomas’s involvement in his DAW and DJ Equipment intensified 2023, so did his skill progression, leading to a revival in remixing after MINT had ceased to produce original content. Bejeweled 3 became one of the first solo remixes he produced in years. This version was symbolic – having welcomed a son in 2013, Thomas wanted to honor his son in a way akin to Emily’s Song as it wasn’t included in the first distributions. This new remix, titled Bejeweled 3, incorporated samples recorded by both children, bringing a personal and family-centered legacy to MINT’s catalog.

During this same period, Witness 2024 (as mentioned) emerged, benefiting from Thomas’s expertise with Reason Studio 13, which brought fresh inspiration and production possibilities to the track. This revitalized Witness release represents a continuation of MINT’s experimental spirit, sustaining their influence in electronic music well into a new era​.
